Chattogram Port Sees 9% Drop in Import Costs

Industry: Shipping
Economic Tag: Import

Imports through Chattogram port saw a minimal 0.12% year-on-year decline in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2024. While import volume remained steady, import costs dropped by around 9% during the same period. Luxury goods, industrial raw materials, and high-cost capital equipment imports were lower. Some consumer goods prices also decreased in the international market.

Despite the slight drop in import volume, import revenue increased by 7.08%, attributed to higher prices for certain products and fines collected from duty evasion cases. Among the 20 products that saw declines in imports ranging from 12% to 97%, revenue fell by Tk1,077 crore during the first quarter of fiscal year 2024. Imports of six product categories increased by 2% to 264%, generating an additional Tk802 crore in revenue. Container handling at the port decreased by 23,671 twenty-foot equivalent units from July to September 2023.
