Amid rising potato prices and challenges in controlling daily essential commodity costs, the Bangladeshi government has decided to import potatoes. The Ministry of Commerce issued a press release on Monday, announcing this decision. The government aims to increase potato supply in the market to stabilize prices due to the current market situation.
Previously, on September 14, in response to surging prices, the government had set prices for three locally produced food items, including potatoes, eggs, and onions. The government had fixed the retail price of potatoes at Tk 36 per kilogram. However, potatoes are currently being sold in Dhaka’s retail markets at approximately Tk 50 per kilogram.
In light of the ongoing price hike, the government’s decision to import potatoes is a measure to ensure a stable market and address the challenges related to rising food prices. Interested importers have been encouraged to apply to the Ministry of Commerce for this purpose.
