In Satkhira, the coastal district of Bangladesh, the majority of the country’s Bagda Prawn exports are produced. The official production target for this season is 26,000 tons, with an estimated market value of over BDT 2,340 crore. The District Fisheries Directorate reports that 80 percent of the production target has already been achieved.
Last season, the target was 25,000 tonnes, and 24,600 tonnes were produced. For the current season, the target was increased by one thousand tons. Despite these challenges, there is a growing demand for Bagda shrimp, both in the domestic and international markets. The price of Bagda shrimp per kilogram in the market ranges from Tk 900 to Tk 950. However, there is a need for measures to maintain the international market reputation of Satkhira shrimp and address the issues of substandard fry to ensure sustainable production and exports.
