Panchagarh’s tea industry is grappling with a multifaceted crisis, with plummeting tea leaf prices and issues in the newly established online tea auction center. Despite the pricing committee’s recommendation of Tk 18 per kg, tea farmers are only receiving Tk 10-11 per kg as factory owners employ brokers who deduct 30-40% on various pretexts. This decline has forced some farmers to uproot tea trees. The online auction center has conducted two auctions so far, with varying prices.
The crisis is attributed to both the factory owners’ syndicate and inadequate quality tea leaf supply. Factory owners argue that low auction prices result in reduced payments to farmers. There’s a pressing need for better quality control and preventing the sale of tea in the black market.
Panchagarh’s tea industry comprises 7,338 tea gardens over 10,239 acres, with around 50,000 people involved. To overcome the crisis, farmers must provide quality leaves, and factories need to focus on producing better tea.
