The price of onions in Bangladesh has surged by Tk 30, reaching Tk 140 per kg, more than double the government-set price of Tk64-65 per kg. Similarly, potatoes, with a government-set price of Tk35-36 per kg, are being sold at Tk60 per kg. Despite government price controls established in September, local markets are flouting these regulations.
Notably, the price of onions has risen by 122% compared to the previous year, while potato prices have increased by 109%. These price hikes are exacerbating the economic challenges faced by citizens, who are already grappling with increased costs of daily necessities. Despite a recent cut in sugar import duties by the National Board of Revenue, sugar prices have also risen in the market. The escalating food prices are affecting the livelihoods of many citizens, leading to concerns about food security.
