No-Frill Accounts (NFAs) in Bangladesh are making waves as they not only boost remittances but also accumulate savings from countless schoolchildren. These accounts, aimed at individuals with minimal cash resources, witnessed a 1.81% growth, totaling over 31 million accounts with deposits exceeding Tk 64.89 billion in the FY 2022-23 April-June period.
Created by the Bangladesh Bank to ensure financial inclusion, NFAs require an initial deposit of Tk 10, 50, or 100 and have no minimum balance or service charges. These accounts also offer relatively higher interest rates, furthering the welfare of low-income individuals. In addition to remittances, they have a significant role in distributing foreign inward remittances, receiving Tk 367.05 million worth of remittances in the June 2023 quarter.
