The government mandates all public servants, including lower-tier employees, to obtain Electronic Taxpayer Identification Numbers (e-TINs) and file tax returns by November 30, 2023, or face salary suspension. Previously, only those earning above Tk16,000 had to file returns.
The move aligns with the new income tax law, aiming to ensure transparency and tax compliance. Experts support the decision, emphasizing that many low-wage workers possess undisclosed assets and additional income sources. The requirement is expected to broaden the tax net, increase return filings, and enhance revenue collection. Concerns about potential harassment and challenges for lower-educated individuals in tax form completion have also been raised.
