The government has extended power purchasing agreements with three Summit Power plants under a “no electricity, no payment” arrangement, eliminating capacity charges. The Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) secured deals with Madhabdi Power Plant Unit-2, Chandina Power Plant Unit-2, and Ashulia Power Plant Unit-2, totaling 72 megawatts. Summit Power, a key player in private power generation, operates 15 plants with a combined capacity of 976 megawatts.
Last year (2022), the three plants contributed Tk 1.6 billion to Summit Power’s Tk 53 billion total revenue. The move aligns with recommendations to eliminate capacity charges, ensuring more sustainable practices in the power sector. Summit Power’s financial data is awaited, with concerns about currency devaluation impacting profits.
