Prime Minister to Inaugurate Patenga Container Terminal

Industry: Shipping

The newly constructed Patenga Container Terminal (PCT) at Chattogram Port is set to be formally inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after one and a half years of completion. The terminal, with an annual capacity of handling 500,000 TEUs, awaits full functionality pending the appointment of a foreign operator and installation of container handling equipment.

The government nominated Saudi-owned Red Sea Gateway Terminal International (RSGTI) for operation, awaiting final agreement. Users emphasize swift operationalization to leverage proximity to Karnaphuli estuary for faster container loading/unloading. Delays in operator appointment, reminiscent of past projects, are criticized by industry stakeholders.

Despite setbacks, the prime minister’s inauguration and the unveiling of the Bay Terminal masterplan offer positive momentum. Approval for PCT construction came in 2017, with revised plans and reduced costs under a public-private partnership model. The anticipated signing of an agreement with RSGTI is expected this month.
