Govt Spends Tk 7045 Per Capita for Waste Management

Industry: Development

City corporations and municipalities in Bangladesh spend Tk7,045 per capita annually, with only 8% allocated to waste management, reveals a Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics survey. In the fiscal year 2020-21, these local bodies collectively spent Tk28,539 crore, with Tk2,260 crore dedicated to waste management, reflecting an 8% share in total expenditure.

The average annual per capita expenditure on waste management stands at Tk558. The ‘Municipal Waste Management Survey 2022’ notes that despite significant spending, traditional waste management practices persist, lacking proper recycling and management.

Urban planners criticize inefficiencies, emphasizing the need for improved waste collection, transportation, and disposal practices to maximize the benefits of allocated funds. The survey also highlights environmental pollution prevention efforts by local governments, including resource management, employment generation, and technological development.
