A new gas reserve has been discovered in an abandoned well (well no 2) of Kailashtila in the Sylhet Gas Field. Gas extraction from this well, suspended for an extended period, resumed with re-drilling starting on July 27. The discovery of a gas reserve was confirmed, with production expected to commence. The well has the potential to yield approximately 7 million cubic feet (mmcf) of gas daily.
Previously, gas extraction ceased due to water intrusion into a single layer of the well. The re-drilling revealed multiple additional layers with confirmed gas presence. The well is also expected to yield around 70 barrels of condensate per day. The well’s workover cost is approximately Tk71.85 crore, fully funded by Sylhet Gas Fields.
This discovery aligns with the government’s plan to explore and drill 46 wells across the country to increase gas production by 618mmcf, with a targeted completion date of 2025. Currently, 13 wells of Sylhet Gas Fields are producing 98mmcf of gas daily, contributing to the national transmission line.
