The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has set the price of a 12 kg LPG cylinder at Tk 1,381 for November 2023, reflecting a 28.58% increase in the last five months of FY 2023-24. However, consumers are reportedly paying Tk 200-250 more per cylinder than the fixed price due to product shortages and market dynamics.
BERC determines LPG prices based on international market prices, transportation, and incidental expenses, following Saudi Aramco’s propane and butane prices. LPG operators cite challenges related to the devaluation of the currency and a shortage of dollars for LC settlements, while BERC blames disruptions in the supply chain and currency-induced exchange rate issues. The LPG sector faces obstacles, including difficulties opening timely loans and significant differences in dollar rates during LC opening and disbursement, potentially leading to industry collapse.
