Due to instability in the supply of essential commodities in the market, Bangladesh is set to import salt following eggs and potatoes. The Ministry of Commerce has approved 264 companies to import one lakh tons of salt to address potential shortages.
The Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce cited natural delays in salt production this season, prompting the precautionary approval for import. Salt production commenced 15 days ago but faced setbacks. He emphasized the import as a preventive measure to ensure market stability. Last year’s high salt production didn’t require import approval during Eid-ul-Adha, but the current delay necessitated preemptive measures. Additionally, the import of 61,950 eggs from India, delayed due to bird flu tests, has been approved, with a total import permission for 20 crore eggs.
