The Bangladesh Textile Mills Corporation (BTMC) is set to lease three textile mills to the private sector, following a similar move with state-owned jute mills. The mills in consideration for lease are Valika Woolen Mills in Chittagong, Sylhet Textile Mills, and Kurigram Textile Mills. A 10-member inter-ministerial working committee has been formed to finalize lease terms, procedures, and proposals.
The committee will work on tendering the mills, suggesting settlement proposals, and determining the leasing process based on expert advice. The BTMC, currently managing 25 mills, has 636.38 acres of unused land. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has approved the initiative, aiming to revitalize closed mills and boost economic activity. Earlier attempts to open closed mills in PPP mode faced financial challenges exacerbated by the pandemic.
