The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is grappling with Tk 243.76 billion in uncollected VAT, with state-owned Petrobangla responsible for 99% of the arrears. Despite a Ministry of Finance (MoF) decision in 2017 to settle Petrobangla’s dues through “book adjustment,” the NBR has faced inaction. Petrobangla, an energy corporation, owes Tk 225.84 billion, nearly equivalent to one month’s tax revenue collection by the NBR. The VAT wing froze Petrobangla’s bank accounts in June 2022 but reactivated them after assurances of debt clearance. The arrears, accumulated since 2016, relate to subsidised gas supply and await MoF allocation for payment.
