Beef prices in Dhaka have sharply declined to approximately Tk 600 per kilogram, down from Tk 800 or more over the past year. Butchers are engaged in price competition, with some offering beef as low as Tk 580 or Tk 590 per kg, even on Facebook. Superstores continue to sell at higher prices.
The drop in prices is attributed to plummeting demand, causing sellers to lower prices from the previously inflated rates. Beef, a staple in Bangladesh, witnessed a surge in prices due to increased production costs and supply chain disruptions. The recent decrease is also linked to a fall in cattle feed prices, political unrest affecting demand, and the Department of Livestock Services reporting 2.4 million unsold cattle heads during Eid-ul-Azha. Other meat products like goat meat and broiler chicken have also seen price reductions.
