Gas Transmission Company Limited (GTCL), Bangladesh’s sole gas transmission entity, faced losses exceeding Tk 1,213 crore ($142 million) in the fiscal year 2022-23. The primary cause was a system loss of Tk 506 crore ($59 million) due to discrepancies in gas flow from production to distribution points.
The introduction of metering at intake-offtake locations exposed the imbalances, shifting the burden from distribution to transmission companies. GTCL seeks to recover by increasing gas transmission charges. The losses jeopardize ongoing projects and raise concerns about their timely completion. GTCL handles 70-75% of the country’s gas transportation, making financial stability crucial for energy infrastructure development.
