The Bangladeshi government fell short by Tk 17,946 crore in tax revenue collection, missing the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) condition for a $4.7 billion loan. The targeted collection between July 2022 and June 2023 was Tk 345,630 crore, but the government only gathered Tk 327,664 crore, as per a Finance Division report. An IMF delegation, reviewing loan conditions in October, was informed of the government’s inability to meet tax collection and foreign currency reserve conditions. Despite these setbacks, the government hopes for approval of the loan’s second tranche, expected to be discussed at an IMF board meeting on December 11 or 12.
