Starting January 1, 2024, businesses in Bangladesh will be required to deposit value-added tax (VAT) of Tk 10 lakh and above through electronic payment or automated chalan, according to the National Board of Revenue (NBR). Previously, firms needed to deposit net VAT of Tk 50 lakh or higher through e-payment.
This move is expected to bring a larger number of businesses under e-payment, enhancing efficiency and preventing forgery. The NBR aims to develop a modern online-based VAT system in the country, encouraging faster and more secure VAT settlements. VAT, a significant source of revenue, constituted 39% of the total tax revenue in fiscal year 2022-23. Business associations, such as the Bangladesh Shop Owners Association, welcomed the decision, emphasizing the need for a smooth-functioning online system.
