The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has extended the deadline for individual taxpayers to submit income tax returns by two months, now set for January 31, 2024, instead of the earlier November 30, 2023 date. This decision follows requests from trade bodies, including the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), citing challenges faced by taxpayers amid the prevailing political situation and upcoming elections.
The FBCCI highlighted the delayed publication of the Income Tax Circular 2023-24 and low awareness among taxpayers about the new law passed in June. The move aims to provide taxpayers with sufficient time to comply with the new regulations. Last year, Bangladesh had 36 lakh taxpayers filing income and expenditure statements, reflecting a 38% YoY increase.
