Global apparel brands Bestseller and H&M will invest in a groundbreaking offshore wind-power project in Bangladesh, pledging at COP28 in Dubai. The project, with an approximate 500 MW capacity, marks the first utility-scale offshore wind firm off Cox’s Bazar coast.

The initiative aligns with Bangladesh’s goal to derive 40% of power from renewables by 2041. Developed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, the project, starting in 2028, aims to significantly boost renewable energy availability in Bangladesh, potentially in collaboration with local partner Summit Power. It anticipates job creation, stabilizing energy supply, and an annual reduction of 725,000 tonnes of emissions.

The Global Fashion Agenda urges more brands to co-invest in renewable energy projects to expedite industry decarbonization. Industry leaders view this as a positive step towards sourcing from Bangladesh in the long term.
