Over the last decade, Bangladesh has witnessed a substantial growth in duck production, rising from 4 crore 89 lakh in the fiscal year 2013-14 to 6 crore 60 lakh in 2022-23. This marks a significant increase of 1 crore 71 lakh or 28.5% in duck production.
The Haor region and northern areas have become hubs for commercial duck farming, contributing to the surge. Duck sales peak during the winter season, with 10 to 15 trucks arriving in Dhaka daily, expected to rise as winter progresses. Despite being a seasonal business, ducks sell well throughout the year.
The urban meat trade has played a pivotal role in driving production, and the duck market is estimated to be around Tk 3,500 crore annually, though industry insiders believe the market is larger than official estimates, with over 10,000 registered and unregistered commercial duck farms in the country. As the duck market expands, so does the demand for duck eggs.
