The early-winter potato harvest has commenced in Bangladesh, with stored potatoes maintaining a price range of Tk 45-55 per kilogram nationwide. Newly harvested potatoes are retailing at Tk 120-160 per kilogram in Dhaka and Tk 70-80 per kilogram in the Rangpur region.
Nilphamari district, the initial region for potato harvest, faced challenges with cultivation dropping from 8,500 to 6,000 hectares due to heavy rainfall in October. Despite crop losses, potato prices have reached a three-year high, with farmers receiving Tk 55-60 per kilogram for early-grown ‘carrage’ and ‘seven’ varieties.
The Department of Agriculture Marketing (DAM) predicts a price drop in mid-December as the harvest season peaks in northern districts, where nearly 16,000 hectares are now under potato cultivation. Private sector imports of over 15,000 tonnes of potatoes from India have occurred in the past month, but prices remain high. Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) urges the government to set minimum and maximum prices to alleviate the burden on farmers and consumers.
