The prices of onions in Bangladesh surged overnight following India’s decision to ban exports until March 31,2024. Local onions are now sold at Tk 180–Tk 200 per kg, up from Tk 120–Tk 140, while imported onions are priced at Tk 160–Tk 190, compared to Tk 120–Tk 130 a day earlier. The sudden price increase has led to accusations of market manipulation by traders. Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) President contends that there is no immediate shortage, and traders are exploiting the situation for extra profit. He suggests that the government should take stricter measures to prevent manipulation. Last season, Bangladesh produced 34.86 lakh tonnes of onions, with imports exceeding 11.65 lakh tonnes.
