The government is importing 52,000 tonnes of onions from India to stabilize the local market after India’s export ban caused a price surge. The Ministry of Commerce has instructed deputy commissioners to monitor onion prices and ensure fair sales. Efforts are underway to import onions from alternative sources as well. The Commerce Ministry aims to control onion prices and continue selling them at reasonable rates to low-income groups through the TCB. The senior commerce secretary urged the business community to act responsibly and not take advantage of price fluctuations. He questioned the sudden price hike and emphasized the need for ethical business practices. The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection is conducting nationwide drives to regulate essential prices, including onions.
