In the financial year 2022-23, only 408 market drives were conducted, marking a 46% drop compared to the 759 drives carried out in the previous year. The government has further slashed the market drive target for FY24 to a mere 250, a significant reduction from the annual target of 720 drives over the past three years. Essential items like wheat flour, eggs, chicken, sugar, and vegetables have frequently broken previous price records.
Onion prices soared above Tk200 per kilogram, while potato prices shot up to Tk65-70, and sugar reached Tk150-170 per kilogram. Egg prices experienced volatility, reaching Tk165-180 per dozen. Atta and maida prices hit an all-time high, with atta retailing at a maximum of Tk75 per kilogram, marking a nearly 100% increase. Despite a notable drop in global wheat prices, flour prices have surged due to limited government intervention in the market. The Directorate of National Consumers Right Protection lacks sufficient manpower in one-third of the districts.
