The Bangladesh Jeweller’s Association (Bajus) announced a price increase for gold and silver. The price of 22-carat gold per bhori rose to Tk 109,292 from Tk 108,125, while 22-carat silver increased to Tk 2,100 from Tk 1,715. Gold prices surpassed Tk 1 lakh in July and reached over Tk 1.09 lakh on November 29,2023. Despite minimal gold imports, prices are influenced by global fluctuations and domestic market volatility. The country’s annual gold demand ranges from 20 to 40 tonnes, with 80 percent met through smuggling. To curb imports and conserve foreign currency, Bangladesh Bank mandated a 100 percent margin on gold letters of credit in August last year. This move aimed to discourage imports and preserve foreign currency reserves, which have declined by about 25 percent in the past 18 months.
