Garment Industry Eyes 15% Cotton Import Reduction

Industry: RMG & Textile, Yarn & Spinning

Bangladesh could reduce cotton imports by 15% through efficient recycling of garment waste, potentially saving nearly $700 million in 2022 and over $4.8 billion in the first 11 months of the current year (2023). The Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) highlights that the country imported over 18 lakh tonnes of cotton worth Tk47,869 crore in 2022, with imports in the first 11 months of the current year reaching 12.27 lakh tonnes worth Tk32,408 crore.

Garment-exporting factories generate 4-5 lakh tonnes of waste, and recycling 5% of this waste could lead to substantial savings. However, challenges include a 22% VAT on recycled yarn, financing issues, and a lack of technology investment. The garment recycling industry could potentially export an additional $5 to $6 billion worth of garments annually by recycling 4 lakh tonnes of waste.

Currently, Bangladesh generates $300 million to $400 million from exporting a portion of garment waste. The BTMA notes that the country has 40 recycling factories, with more in the pipeline, including Pacific Jeans, DBL Group, and Bitopi Group. These efforts align with global brands like G-Star, H&M, and Inditex, which prioritize sustainability and recycled materials in their products.
