Japan has become the leading foreign aid contributor to Bangladesh, disbursing $610.98 million in the July–November period of fiscal year 2023–24. This amount surpasses the aid from the Asian Development Bank ($387.93 million) and the World Bank ($444.27 million) during the same period. Japan has been a significant development partner, financing major projects such as the MRT-01, MRT-05, MRT-06, the rail bridge over the Jamuna, and the third terminal at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is actively supporting Bangladesh, with its loans having the highest amount and the lowest interest rates among development partners. Japan has provided $31.84 billion in financial support for Bangladesh’s socio-economic development since 1971.
