The National Board of Revenue (NBR) reports a 21% YoY increase in VAT collection from large companies in the first five months of FY24, totaling Tk26,000 crore. The Large Taxpayers Unit (LTU-VAT) attributes this surge to the gas price hike and tobacco tariff increase, resulting in higher sales prices and increased VAT.
The gas sector’s VAT collection rose by 105%, driven by a 187% gas price hike in February 2023. Additionally, the cigarette sector saw higher VAT despite a sales decline, as tariff adjustments contributed to sector growth. Mobile phone sector VAT grew by 22%, mainly due to resolving disputes and clearing pending dues. The increased indirect taxes raise concerns about additional pressure on consumers already facing high inflation. The top 10 VAT paying sectors reveal varied revenue growth, emphasizing the need to focus on controlling tax evasion.
