The top twenty imported products in Bangladesh saw a 7.33% increase in tax contributions despite a decline in both volume and value last year (2022). The Chattogram Customs House attributes this success to stringent measures against fake declarations and trade-based money laundering. High-speed diesel, furnace oil, and cement clinkers remained the top revenue-generating products. However, raw material imports by VAT-registered manufacturers dropped out of the top twenty. These products contributed Tk 274 billion in revenue, up from Tk 255.27 billion in 2022, with a 2.71% decrease in import volume and a 2.22% decline in assessed value. Increased customs enforcement and penalties for misdeclaration played a crucial role in revenue growth, according to officials and experts. Notably, the import of high-speed diesel emerged as the highest revenue contributor.
