In 2023, Bangladesh’s knitwear items contributed over 47% to total export earnings, reaching $26.55 billion, making it the leading foreign currency earner. The country’s total merchandise shipments amounted to $55.78 billion, with $47.38 billion (84.98%) derived from readymade garment (knit and woven) exports.
The knit subsector’s success is attributed to strong backward linkage, quick product delivery capability, and government policy support, including cash incentives and utilities. Changing global fashion trends and buyer preferences for swift product delivery also influenced the growth. Meanwhile, woven exporters face challenges due to the absence of necessary backward linkage, with woven fabric demand primarily met through imports. The knitwear segment’s integration and compliance with safety standards post-industrial accidents have contributed to its appeal to global buyers.
