Boro paddy cultivation costs in Bangladesh have surged by 28%, reaching Tk 17,850 per bigha this season in 2023, compared to Tk 13,900 in 2022. Farmers across regions like Kishoreganj, Habiganj, Sylhet, and Jamalpur reported an additional expenditure of Tk 4,000 per bigha for Boro cultivation. The breakdown reveals a 23% rise in irrigation costs to Tk 3,200, a 38% increase in labor costs to Tk 9,300, and a doubling of pesticide costs to Tk 950. Concerns arise as farmers worry about getting fair prices, with market rates for medium-quality paddy currently at Tk 1,100 to Tk 1,150 per maund. Last year, the government-fixed collection price for Boro paddy was Tk 1,200 per maund.
