Onion production is expected to reach a record high in 2024, with the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) setting a cultivation target of 36.73 lakh tonnes from 2.6 lakh hectares of land. Farmers are motivated by higher prices for the crop in 2023, leading to increased cultivation. Approximately 1.36 lakh hectares of land have already been brought under onion cultivation, almost a month ahead of the traditional sowing season. In 2023, about 2.49 lakh hectares were used for onion cultivation, producing 33 lakh tonnes of the crop. The DAE aims to achieve bumper yields, but rising production costs, including increased labor wages, could impact farmers’ profits. Despite the expansion, concerns arise about potential price drops when new stocks arrive in March-April,2024.
