In fiscal year 2022-23, Bangladesh’s hilsa fish production reached 5.71 lakh metric tonnes, a significant increase from 2.99 lakh metric tonnes in 2008-09. The government’s conservation initiatives, such as the jatka and mother hilsa conservation program, along with effective sanctuary management, contributed to this success. Hilsa, a culturally significant fish, accounts for about 12% of the country’s total fish production. The government’s annual ban on hilsa fishing during the breeding period, coupled with Vulnerable Group Feeding assistance, has played a crucial role. Mother hilsa conservation efforts resulted in over 50% successfully laying eggs during the fishing ban in 2022, leading to the addition of approximately 40,276 crore jatkas to the hilsa population. Additionally, hilsa exports to India from 2019-20 to 2022-23 totaled 5,541 metric tonnes, earning Tk 4,39,000 crore.
