Female-Headed Households Decrease from 13.9% to 12.6%

Industry: Development

The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics reveals a concerning decline in female-headed households, dropping from 13.9% in 2010 to 12.6% in 2022. Rural areas are particularly affected, witnessing a decline from 14.9% in 2020 to 12.7% in 2022. Bangladesh now lags behind South Asian countries in female household leadership, including Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, and Nepal.

The dip is attributed to factors such as reduced employment opportunities, increased dropout rates, poverty, and climate-induced disasters. The closure of factories, automation, and changes in job types contribute to the decline in female employment. Girls dropping out of education, early marriages, and the limited focus on critical gender issues by women’s organizations are also concerning. Educationists suggest government plans to increase female student participation and vocational education to align women with suitable job opportunities.
