The government is in talks with India for the import of 4.5 million tons of rice and wheat through an annual quota. The discussions aim to secure the import of food in two stages—government and private.At present there are various restrictions on the export of rice and wheat in India. In such a situation, various countries are taking advantage of import quota from India.
Bangladesh also wants to take advantage of the same. According to the sources of the Ministry of Food, India has been informed about the demand for importing 8 lakh tons of rice under the quota facility at the government level and 10 lakh tons at the private level. And in the case of wheat, the demand of 7 lakh tons and 20 lakh tons for private import has been reported. The government is engaging with rice business owners and is optimistic about the import discussions with India.
