The price of gold in Bangladesh has surged to Tk 112,440 per bhori (11.664 grams), marking the highest in the country’s history. The Bangladesh Jewellers’ Association (Bajus) announced the price hike, citing an increase in pure gold prices in the local market. This surpasses the previous rate of Tk 1.11 lakh for each bhori of 22-carat gold ornaments. The decision follows a pattern of gold price increases, with the metal crossing the Tk 1,00,000-mark in July last year and reaching over Tk 1.09 lakh on November 29, 2023. Gold prices in Bangladesh are influenced by international fluctuations and domestic market dynamics, even though the country primarily relies on smuggling to meet 80% of its 20 to 40-tonne annual gold demand.
