The concentration of defaulted loans in the top five banks has increased by 30% year-on-year, reaching around Tk 75,000 crore in the April-June quarter of 2023, according to a Bangladesh Bank report. The non-performing loan (NPL) ratio for these banks was 47.97% in June last year, a 4.51 percentage point increase from March. The report emphasizes that the higher concentration of NPLs “might pose a concern for the banking industry as a whole.” While the banking sector showed a modest increase in profitability, asset quality declined, with the NPL ratio rising to 10.11% at the end of June 2023 from 8.80% at the end of March 2023.
