Foreign Airlines Halt Ticket Sales to Local Agencies

Industry: Aviation

Several foreign airlines serving Bangladesh are avoiding selling tickets to local travel agencies due to challenges in repatriating profits amid the country’s dollar crisis. As of June 2023, Bangladesh owed foreign carriers $214 million, leading to a decline in carriers’ profit repatriation. To work around this issue, some airlines are selling tickets to overseas online travel agencies (OTA), impacting local agents and causing higher ticket prices for passengers. The situation may result in a shift of the air ticket business worth around Tk 40,000 crore to overseas OTAs if not addressed. Aviation experts emphasize the need for a resolution to avoid harming Bangladesh’s image and discouraging airlines from serving the country.
