International clothing retailers and brands continue to prefer sea routes for shipping goods from Bangladesh to Europe despite a more than 30% increase in freight charges and an additional 15 days in sailing time due to the rerouting of ships away from the Red Sea. The conflict in the Red Sea, a key shipping lane, has led to increased risks and higher insurance premiums.
Reinsurers worldwide are charging 3.5 times more to cover the risks arising from the crisis. The detour around the Cape of Good Hope has added around 4,000 miles and 10-12 days sailing time to each trip. Although air shipment is more expensive, brands are avoiding it due to higher compensation for increased carbon emissions. The freight charge has increased by more than 30%, and companies are still opting for sea routes despite the added costs. The longer lead time is affecting shipment priorities and may lead to fewer orders. Less than 10% of garment items exported from Bangladesh are air-shipped.
