The power sector in Bangladesh is grappling with challenges as the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) predicts a total production capacity of 31,000 megawatts by 2024. Despite a 10.80% growth in capacity, electricity production only increased by 5.85%, resulting in financial losses. The BPDB’s accumulated losses reached Tk11,765 crore in the 2022–23 fiscal year, leading to multiple increases in electricity tariffs.
Energy experts highlight the need to eliminate inefficient power plants and manage demand to address financial losses. However, concerns arise as the country’s actual connected capacity to the grid is around 21,000 megawatts, raising questions about the need for additional capacity. The power sector’s financial burden poses challenges, emphasizing the importance of efficient utilization and reducing unnecessary expenditures.
