The Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) advocates a return to 2022 gas prices amidst a severe gas crisis, leading to a 60% decline in production. The government increased gas prices by 179% in January last year to adjust subsidies and reduce the fiscal deficit.
The industrial hub of Narayanganj faced near-blackout conditions for 15 days, and gas pressure in Savar, Gazipur, and Ashulia has dropped to 1-2 PSI, severely impacting production. BTMA President expresses despair, urging the government to prioritize industry in gas supply and return to 2022 prices. He blames Petrobangla for failing to address the gas issue and suggests redirecting the gas supply to industries, potentially generating more foreign currency.
The BTMA also criticizes the Bangladesh Bank’s “weak” monetary policy for the country’s economic challenges. The plea comes during a press conference at the 18th Dhaka International Textile and Garment Machinery Exhibition (DTG) 2024.
