Onion prices have surged by Tk 15 per kilogram in just a few days, reaching Tk 100-130 per kg. This increase has strained consumers during the peak harvesting season. Wholesale prices for seasonal Murikata onions have risen sharply, forcing retailers to adjust their prices to Tk 100-110 per kg.
Imported onions are even pricier, fetching Tk 115-118 per kg wholesale, translating to Tk 120-130 for consumers. TCB data shows a 12-20% price jump in three days, with prices now 153% higher than last year. Traders blame a supply crunch from key onion-producing districts, with prices rising from Tk 52-60 to Tk 78-80 per kg.
Despite predictions of adequate supply until March, the halt in Indian onion exports has impacted the market. The CAB Vice President urged the government to encourage onion imports from alternative markets to prevent further price escalation. The BTTC recommended exploring onion imports from Egypt, Turkey, China, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the Netherlands as viable alternatives to Indian supply.
