Bangladesh has landed among the top ten most corrupt nations globally, securing the 10th position in Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2023. With a score of 24 out of 100, the country slipped two notches from the previous year, marking its highest corruption level in the last era.
The report highlights pervasive issues such as bribery, misappropriation of government funds, and abuse of public office, attributing the rise to uncontrolled red tape and challenges in the state’s functioning. The Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Executive Director expressed disappointment, citing weak law enforcement and infrastructure contributing to the serious corruption problem.
To address this, recommendations include depoliticizing state institutions, tackling political influence, and ensuring freedom for media and civil society. In the South Asian context, Bangladesh stands as the second-lowest among eight countries, emphasizing the need for systemic reforms to improve its standing.
