Twelve banks failed to deduct VAT, tax, and fees amounting to Tk 315 crore ($36.75 million) between 2017 and 2021 for outward remittances related to the import of services. Nine other banks, not among the twelve, have yet to respond to Bangladesh Bank’s inquiry on VAT and tax deductions, further complicating the issue. The central bank identified the non-compliance, with banks such as City Bank, HSBC, and Dhaka Bank failing to adhere to tax and VAT regulations. The delayed responses hinder the central bank from calculating VAT and tax deductibles, potentially resulting in revenue shortfalls for the government.
