Housewives in Bangladesh have amassed significant bank deposits totaling Tk 2,01,842 crore by the end of 2023, surpassing traders and industrialists. Despite challenges such as limited access to banking services and gender-based discrimination, housewives have shown remarkable growth in deposits, increasing by 69% since 2019. While some of these deposits belong to the middle and lower-middle class, a substantial portion is attributed to affluent individuals, professionals, and owners of illicit funds. Instances of using female family members’ accounts for tax evasion and concealing assets have been reported, highlighting the complexity of the banking landscape. Expatriates also contribute to housewives’ deposits, albeit primarily for consumption. The trend reflects both savings habits and potential misuse of accounts, prompting scrutiny from regulatory authorities and law enforcement agencies.
