Bangladesh Bank has instructed banks to refrain from imposing fines or interest on supervision charges for loans, ensuring uniformity in collection methods. In June 2023, BB permitted a 1% supervision charge on consumer and CMSME loans, clarifying that it should be collected annually without compound interest. However, inconsistencies in fee calculation prompted BB’s recent directive, emphasizing adherence to its guidelines. Any excess collection must be refunded or adjusted, with no charges imposed before June 2023. This move aims to standardize practices and protect borrowers from undue financial burdens, aligning with BB’s efforts to promote transparency and fairness in the banking sector.
