Despite being directly involved in food production, one in every four households relying on agriculture faces moderate to severe food insecurity, according to a Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) survey. Conducted among 29,760 homes nationwide, the survey highlights that 26.13% of agricultural-dependent households experience food insecurity. Notably, 0.95% face extreme food crises. The prevalence of moderate food insecurity suggests potential health risks due to nutrient deficiencies. The situation is exacerbated by elevated inflation, particularly affecting low-income groups. Agricultural laborers, despite producing food, have limited access to it, further compounded by their irregular income. Urgent measures, such as labor-intensive social safety net programs, are needed to address this issue. The survey underscores the need for policies targeting agricultural households to alleviate food insecurity and ensure access to nutritious food.
