The Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority (IDRA) has issued show-cause notices to four life insurers for failing to settle claims worth Tk 264.57 crore within the stipulated timeframe. Sunflower Life Insurance, Progressive Life Insurance Company, Sunlife Insurance Company, and Homeland Life Insurance Company received notices based on unaudited financial reports. The Insurance Act, 2010 mandates claim settlements within 90 days of policy maturity. Sunflower Life, Progressive, Sunlife, and Homeland failed to settle 71%, 61%, 49%, and 29% of claims, respectively. Corruption and irregularities contributed to a liquidity crisis hindering claim settlements, according to an IDRA official. Bangladesh’s insurance sector recorded a claim settlement rate of 65.19% in 2023, trailing the global average of 97-98%. Bangladesh ranks lowest in insurance penetration in the Asia-Pacific region, with a mere 0.50% ratio according to the Swiss Re Institute’s 2023 report.
